DC worm gear motors are favored in industrial automation specifically for their space-saving 90-degree shaft exit and self-locking capabilities. When the lead angle of the worm shaft is smaller than the friction angle between the worm and worm wheel, the motor output shaft cannot drive the motor input (worm) backward. In applications such as medical lift beds, cargo shutters, and vertical actuators across Slovak sorting centers, this self-locking property eliminates the need for electromagnetic brakes, simplifying design and reducing overall energy footprints.
A typical challenge of worm gearboxes is lower operational efficiency compared to spur or planetary configurations, due to the high sliding contact between the mating teeth. To combat sliding wear, TTM Motors leverages a highly engineered combination of case-hardened steel (worm) and high-tensile phosphor bronze (wheel). This combination minimizes coefficients of friction and manages heat dissipation.
